Meet the Maker: Rachel @ Crafty Little Creations

It's about time for a brand spanking new Meet the Maker!!
Today it's Rachel from Crafty Little Creations...

Who are you and what’s the name of your business?
My name is Rachel Gillham and I'm from Crafty Little Creations

Where are you from?
I am from Leicester originally but now live around half an hour from there in the Rural county of Rutland in a little village surrounded by fields.

What’s your favourite colour?
this one is so hard to choose as I love a lot of colour, but my favourite at the moment seems to be turquoise- I am using it whenever I get a chance in my cards!

What’s your favourite food?
love paella and making it too- I make it at every chance I get, usually deviating from the recipe to add whatever is in season and ready from our allotment

How would you spend your perfect day?
I would love to spend a day at one of the big papercraft events drooling over the nummy goodies there was on sale- if it was my perfect, perfect day it would be a free spending spree sort of day!

What do you make?
I make cards mainly but dabble in other sorts of papercraft too- I have a love of origami boxes which I also make, and would love to make 3D paper keepsakes but they still scare me a little!

What’s your favourite thing you’ve ever made?
My favourite card so far is  a shabby vintage style card that took me hours to make, using flowers from another facebook page Samaflora and lots of other interesting products including paint and embossing enamel!

Why did you start your business?
I originally started crafty little creations to sell something else, but I really wasn't enjoying it. My friend Sam introduced me to papercrafting just over a year ago and since then it has become a major part of my life- not just a business, it is a large part of my life, and I love to make people beautiful and personal cards that you just would not be able to find in a shop.

What are your inspirations?
I get a lot of inspiration from my two children, and also the fantastic Design team makes for the images I use (all made by very different digital/rubber stamp designers)

What would be your one tip for anyone taking up a new hobby, or turning that hobby in to a business?
Keep trying..it is a hard market out there today and it doesn't happen overnight!

Do go and say hello to Rachel!

Lovely lemony victoria sponge!

Great British Bake off starts tonight! I can't wait!

In honour of the bestest cakey show on TV I've decided that every Wednesday (ish!) whilst it's on, I'll share one of my favorite recipes... Which also means I'm going to have to bake at least once a week so I can take pics to go with my recipes, yay!!

So, today it's my lovely lemony victoria sponge...
(sorry if the photo quality's a bit ropey, these are old pics that I found whilst deciding what recipe to do)

Ingredients:

180g self-raising flour
180g butter
180 g caster sugar
3 eggs
2 small lemons
200g cream cheese
3 tbsps lemon curd
Lots of icing sugar
  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C, and grease and line two sandwich tins
  2. Sift the flour into a large bowl and add the butter, caster sugar and eggs, beat it all together until light and fluffy.
  3. Grate the rind and squeeze the juice from one of the lemons and whisk in, then divide the mixture evenly between the two tins. Bake for about 20-25 minutes until golden and firm to the touch, and the cakes are starting to pull away from the sides of the tins. Turn out on to a wire rack, remove the baking paper and let them cool.
  4. Grate the zest from the second lemon. Beat the cream cheese and zest together, then beat in enough sifted icing sugar until it's light and spreadable.
  5. Sandwich the cakes together with a third of the mixture, adding a lovely dollop of lemon curd, then spread the rest of the cream cheese frosting on the topYou can also add sprinkles, lemon zest, sugar lemons, or anything else you fancy on top! Or you can shove all of the frosting in the middle of the sandwich, and dust icing sugar over the top - this is slightly less fussing, and easier if you're baking with kids!!

If you're feeling extra specially fancy, candied lemons are amazing on top... I usually cheat and buy them... But here's some instructions if you fancy trying it yourself!

You'll need:
2 lemons
225g caster sugar
225ml water

  1. Rinse and 'top and tail' the lemons and with a sharp knife, vertically peel strips between the top and the tail.
  2. Place the peel into a small saucepan and cover with water. Over a medium heat, bring the water to a simmer for about 10 minutes. Drain and set the peel aside.
  3. In the same pan, add the sugar and the 225ml of water. Once again heat until the sugar dissolves and you have a syrup. Add the peel and allow to simmer for about 15 minutes.
  4. Prepare a drying area by placing some baking paper under a wire cooling rack. Drain the syrup and place the peel on to the cooling rack. Sprinkle with caster sugar to coat thoroughly. Allow to cool and dry out completely.
  5. Store in an airtight container or use immediately.

Enjoy!

In pictures... July

Well, July's been one hell of a month!!
It kicked off with a trip to Brighton, which involved loads of shopping, great food, amazing cocktails, and catching up with friends, it couldn't if been a better start to the month!
Its also been a strange one as I've left my day job after almost eight years, but there's been lots of laughs, tears, cake, nights out, and love along the way... I've found out who my real friends are, had a cull of the ones that no longer deserved to be a part of my life, been on a few really lovely dates, spoilt myself, been spoilt by others, and just enjoyed all of the things that I LOVE about my life! A lot can be said about the kindness of others y'know!
And lastly, I'm happy, truly happy, the sort of happy that makes you smile to yourself for no reason, and I like it!

I'm soooo rubbish!

I'm sorry I've abandoned you ever so slightly oh lovely blog! The last couple of weeks have been a bit crazy, I've now left the day job, which subsequently meant lots of partying, I'd been there for eight years, I had to!! And on top of that, there's been birthdays and christenings and I'm sure I've crammed more in than just that!

So, I'm making a pledge to not ignore my blog! I mean, the poor thing's done nothing at all to deserve being ignored after all!

There's a couple of Meet the Makers lined up, and I've been baking so I'll share the recipes with you guys too, so I'll be back soon, I promise!

I love Brighton!

Brighton is one of my most favoritist places in the world!
For me it's right up there next to Marrakech, Milan, and Valencia, and loads better than a million
squillion other places!
Here's my definitive list of all of the places to go and things to do if you're visiting...

OK, so to start off you have to go to the beach, I live in a seaside town and I still have to visit the beach!
Other than all of your usual seaside stuff, there's lovely shops, art galleries, nice bars, great restaurants, and all sorts of random stuff going on - this time when I was there there was a big screen on the beach showing loads of different things... I ended up there on Dirty Dancing night, was singing and dancing and everything!!

Also, the pier's pretty cool! I don't normally do piers as there's one out of my window and it's always been just there, and all those noisy game things don't do it for me, but Brighton pier is definitely worth a visit, even if it's just to sit with an icecream!

There's also Volks Railway which is my favorite way to travel between the incredibly cool busy bits and the marina!

Now, you have to go shopping whilst there, and you have to go to the absolutely freaking amazing Choccywoccydoodah when you need to rest your feet!!
They've recently moved too, so now the shop and cafe are all in one place - AMAZING!!!

I would highly recommend all of it! And they have boxes so you can take what you can't fit in away with you!
PS... The double chocolate milkshake is to die for!

Right, back to shopping!

The Lanes are a must, they're full of absolutely gorgeous jewellery shops, little boutiques, and cute cafes, plus it's where you'll now find Choccywoccydoodah!

Also, you have to visit Berts! It's amazing, and very almost worth driving down to Brighton for on it's own!!
It's up in North Laine, which is where I head straight after Choccywoccy. It's a whole area full of super cool, really chilled, boho, vintage, and completely amazing shops, cafes, bars and pubs, and I love it!! You have to go there!

To Be Worn Again is the bestest vintage shop in the whole wide world ever!!
It's always one of the places I make a bee line for, and they now have their huge shop at the very far end of North Laine, and a lovely little shop halfway up so that you can get two fixes in one hit!
There's loads of other fab vintage shops, but this one's by far my favorite!

Other fab places to visit:

She Said: Super sexy, fun and adorable little erotic boutique, that you could get away with telling everyone you've been there, it's the only one I've ever got excited about!
JB's Diner: The best milkshake in the whole entire world and definitely the best diner this side of the Atlantic!!
The Globe: My favoritist pub ever, there's everything from super comfy chairs, to a retro games room, and lots more in between!
The Royal Pavillion: A must, especially if you haven't been before, and looks super pretty at Christmas with it's lights and ice rink!
Irregular Choice: An actual IC shop... It's amazing!
CuBar: Bloody good Mojitos!!
Coast: Bloody good steak!
Pretty Eccentric: One, well two, of the prettiest shops ever. They're cram packed with gorgeous vintage inspired dresses and accessories.
Kemp Town: This pretty area of Brighton is full of lovely cafes and antique shops, with some amazing bars thrown in for good measure!
The Creperie: Mmmmm, icecream! Need I say much more than that?!
Hotel Pelirocco: If you can, stay here, it's amazing!
Starwberry Fields: If you're on a budget stay here!

And if you know of anywhere else I need to visit, pleeeeeeaaaaaase pop them below!!

Happy Holidaying!

A sneaky behind the scenes peak...

Once everything's looking just perfect, and as so many of you are interested, there'll be an entire piece (or maybe even series of posts!) to show you what I've done in my new home... In the meantime, here's a sneaky peak!

When life's a bitch!

I appear to have found myself at a point where not only am I happy and ok to talk about recent events, but I want to, I want to get everything off my chest, out in the open, so that there's finally an end to that chapter.
I'm not sure how this piece is going to pan out, and I don't think I'm going to ever read it back, but hopefully it might make you smile, it'll give you the reasons why my orders have been slower, why my order books have closed for a little while, and why I've needed lots of 'me' time, more than anything I hope that it'll help or inspire someone who's having a rough time of it, whether its right now or in ten years time.

I'll start at the beginning...

Once upon a time there was a slightly crazy girl who fell in love with an equally crazy boy. After a while they moved in together, and eventually the boy persuaded the girl that maybe, even though she'd never seen the point in getting married, having a wedding would cement everything. Along the way the girl decided that she couldn't imagine a life without him, that she'd do whatever it took, and follow him wherever he'd go, just to be happy. In a year they'd be married, ok, so the wedding wasn't going to be very weddingy but they'd be married nonetheless, and in two they'd probably have a kid, regardless of how scared this made the girl, the boy wanted them more than anything and the girl would do anything to make him happy.

Then one day it was all over. The boy had gone and the girl was on her own, in a house she hated, that was full of both the happiest and most awful memories.

After a good week of being a mess the girl realised she had to man up and start getting shit done!...

Sooo.... I'd easily spent a week crying, not eating, not sleeping and wandering about on autopilot looking horrendous. The best mate had given me a kick up the ass and I'd decided it was going to be all about me! Ok, so I was still going home and crying every night, and the mood swings were crazy even by my standards but I knew I had to get on with it! First up, I went shopping, stuff it, I was no longer saving for a wedding was I?! After that I blagged a couple of days off of work (bonus of all of those hours of TOIL I'd built up and said best mate being your supervisor!) I spent my long weekend pretty much on my own, so that I wouldn't have to talk about what was going on, so that nobody would ask how I was, I just shut myself away, watched whatever crap was on tv and ate junk food.

It was the best thing I could've done. Between the food, the sleep and the lack of sympathy I was starting to feel human. Then I had to cancel the wedding. That was hard. At one point I even googled how to! Thing is, there's loads of advice out there for booking one, but how the hell do you cancel it?! How do you tell the vicar, the suppliers, the lovely lady who's making your dream unwedding dress, the photographer who you'd become really friendly with... And then there's the telling family and friends... Truth is, you've just gotta get on with it! I cried, lots, I tried to type an email I could send to suppliers that weren't set in stone about twenty times before eventually just closing my eyes whilst my mouse hovered over the send button and just clicking it. Then I cried some more and necked a bottle of amaretto... It was silly really, I'd never really wanted it, I just wanted him to be happy, it was the most unwedding wedding ever!

Right, now to find somewhere to live. I looked at several flats, all of them were either awful, I couldn't have Barnaby bunny, or I couldn't afford them! When I thought I'd found one, they rang me the morning I was going to go in to pay the deposit to say that the landlord had changed his mind about a rabbit. Great! In the meantime I'd heard from my ex about his new flat, he wanted to know how much longer I needed as he was still paying his half of the house (I'm not slating him, he's been great with the financial stuff)... But I was stuck with no money for a deposit, with a house rabbit he'd bought me, and was quickly running out of time! I took a few days off of flat hunting... Then suddenly an amazing one appeared that seemed far too good to be true. Mum spotted it, I was having a break from flat hunting! It was right where I'd ideally live, under budget, bigger than anything else I'd seen, had an amazing bathroom, and was just perfect, I had to have it!

After booking a viewing for as soon as the agents got the keys, I got called into a meeting at work, still reeling from hopefully finding somewhere lovely to live.

Our team were being restructured. To cut a long story short, I either went for a new role on the same money that was clearly going to be a right bitch, or I was going to have to take a £5k pay cut... Or after almost eight years of doing a job I mostly loved, in a team I mostly loved, I could take voluntary redundancy. I took redundancy after a week of mulling things over.

I had no man, no where to live, and no job. Everything was different and terrifying, yet new and exciting.

The day before confirming my redundancy I went to see the flat, and fell in love instantly! I handed over my credit card there and then and paid the deposit. It was mine all mine!

Two weeks later, I was in my very own flat, and I was officially leaving my job. In the three weeks since moving out of our home and into my almost dream flat quite a lot's happened. I finally feel like me! I'm smiling subcontiously, this all feels like aaaaaages ago, when in reality this all happened only two months ago, and I've even managed to tell people about how cool my unwedding was going to be! I'm not saying its the healthiest way, but I've lost weight and look good for it, my skin's the best its been ever, and I'm being the right amount of selfish. I've been out for drinks with friends and bumped in to friends who haven't known about it all and I haven't cried about it! I feel not quite whole, but I'm happy with how I've come out the other side. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy my own company and just how independent I am. And strong. I'm really bloody strong. And optimistic, I'm genuinely excited about what's to come! I've booked a few days away (to Brighton, of course!) potentially maybe have a date set up (I'm not getting my hopes up, and I'm not sure I want anything out of it, but it'd be lovely to know that someone might like me, let alone think I'm hot, and yet just the thought of it terrifies me!) and am thinking up all the jobs I might like to do (ironically the only job I've ever wanted is a wedding planner! Work that one out!!)

I guess I'm trying to say that no matter what happens, no matter how many things are thrown at you, and no matter how many dreams are shattered, I will be fine. You'll be fine. Everything happens for a reason, and there's always other paths to wander up.... And you never know who you might meet on the way.

Thanks for coming along for the ride

A trip to Taunton...

Taunton's always been full of happy memories for me. My grandpa used to take us there all the time as kids, and Vivary Park, with its pretty fountain and lovely gardens, where most of these pics were taken, was one of my places as a kid!

We used to feed the ducks, get chased by geese (they only ever seemed to chase me while my grandpa and brother would be in fits of laughter!) eat icecream, play hide n seek, and try and put the golfers off!!... And my parents wondered why I was so mischievous!!

Around the lovely town there's some other bits I always have to hunt down for the sentiment, The Castle hotel (I wanted to be a princess just so that I could live there!) with its sword in the stone that we'd all have a good go at pulling out (its since been moved to just around the corner) and the bizarre tree that appears to have grown around a pile of bricks as they now jut out of it at all sorts of angles!

If you're going there do let me know if you find everything!

A trip to Clifton...

Clifton Village is one of my favoritist places, and luckily for me, its only half an hour away. I quite often pop up here, have a wander, and do a spot of shopping, specially when the sun's shining!!

There's so many really lovely, independent shops to explore, including my favorite, Clifton Vintage Boutique in The Arcade (there's pics below) where you'll never, ever be disapointed and the owner is just the lovliest! Today I found an utterly gorgeous kimono with the most amazing detail I've ever seen, and bought myself a pretty Liberty fabric skirt! As well as fab greengrocers, butchers and deli's to pick up dinner, there's a couple of the best florists I've ever come across,  loads of cafes and bars where you can find all sorts of delights (I'd highly recommend Primrose Cafe if you're lucky enough to find a seat, today I had to settle for Cafe Nero as it was the only place with a spare seat outdoors!) and there's beautiful parks for basking in the sun, and wonderful views from Clifton Suspension Bridge if you really can't be bothered to shop!!

The Arcade and the few shops just outside are my absolute favorites, but there's also some lovely ones on The Mall, and all along the walk between! The charity shops are also definitely worth a visit - not a single piece of nastiness in sight!!

There's a really cute house I often park by too, you'll see it below... It always makes me smile!

I love it there!!
